Saudi Arabia is facing serious Obesity issues (Obesity Bariatric Surgery). A severe health disorder, obesity is excess body fat that can harm a person’s health.

Riyadh — Obesity is a serious health disorder in Saudi Arabia. It is classified as excess body fat that can harm one’s health and lifestyle. A person is obese when they have a BMI (body mass index) equal to or greater than 30. 

BMI is a measure of weight with height.

Bariatric surgery will have health insurance coverage in Saudi Arabia effective from October 1 this year. Dr. Nasser Al-Johani announced the decision. He is the spokesman and a director at the Council of Health Insurance.

According to Al-Johani, the health insurance coverage scheme for obesity aims to provide appropriate options for health insurance beneficiaries and reduce obesity rates in the country. 

Al-Johani underlined that the health insurance coverage includes all age groups. “This follows the best clinical practices and bariatric operations performed based on eligibility criteria such as international clinical evidence and the Saudi Guideline for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery,” he added.
