Kabul: The Afghan capital Kabul was rocked by two explosions and gunfire at the military hospital site, the BBC reported. A Taliban spokesman said the first blast occurred in front of the 400-bed Sardar Daud Khan hospital and the second, nearby.

The spokesman said there had been deaths but did not give numbers. However, an eyewitness told the BBC there was fighting inside the hospital grounds.

Unconfirmed reports said at least 15 people died in the incident, and more were wounded. Video footage from Kabul Military Hospital showed a plume of smoke over the area and recorded the sounds of gunfire.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts. Still, Afghanistan’s Bakhtar news agency quoted witnesses saying several fighters from the Islamic State group had stormed the hospital and clashed with security forces.

A doctor informed the AFP news agency he had to seek shelter in a safe room. “I can still hear gunfire from inside the hospital. I believe the attackers are going from room to room,” he said.

In August, a bombing by the group at Kabul international airport killed more than 150 civilians and 13 US soldiers. In an earlier attack on the Sardar Daoud Hospital, over 30 people were killed and 50 others wounded when ISIS gunmen dressed as doctors stormed the building.
