Virginia: A US jury found that actress Amber Heard had made defamatory claims of abuse case against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. The Jury decided to award Depp $15 million in damages.
In a widely watched six-week trial, a Virginia jury ruled that Amber Heard defamed her ex-husband.
The seven-member Jury in Virginia found that a 2018 article written by Amber Heard on the “sexual violence”; she had suffered was defamatory to Johnny Depp.
The Jury found it was written with malicious intentions. This made her guilty of libel. The Jury found that Amber Heard was defamed by statements made by Johnny Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman.
Adam Waldman told the Daily Mail that her abuse claims were a “hoax.” Hence Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in damages.
The Jury reached a verdict on the 1st of June 2022 in the high-profile defamation case. The seven-person Virginia jury deliberates for about 13 hours over three days; in the Fairfax County Circuit Court near the US capital.
Closing arguments in the case were then held on Friday at the end of a six-week trial. The trial was riding on claims and counterclaims of domestic violence between the two Hollywood celebrities.
The 58-year-old Johnny Depp filed suit against Amber Heard; over an op-ed she penned for The Washington Post in December 2018.
In this op-ed, Amber Heard went on to describe herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
The Texas-born Amber Heard, who had a leading role in Aquaman, did not name Johnny Depp in the piece.
However, Johnny Depp sued her for implying he was a domestic abuser and was seeking $50 million in damages.
The 36-year-old Amber Heard countersued Johnny Depp for $100 million; saying she was defamed by statements made by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman.
Adam Waldman told the Daily Mail her abuse claims were a “hoax.” The Jury has been working really hard through a unique verdict form that contains numerous questions.
The eight-page verdict form contained 24 questions about Johnny Depp’s suit against Amber Heard and 18 questions about Amber Heard’s countersuit against Depp.
Both parties needed to prove the statements were defamatory and win punitive or compensatory damages.
The Jury needed to find whether they were made with actual malice. Meaning with the knowledge that they were false or with “reckless disregard” for whether they were wrong or not.
Johnny Depp flew to England over the Memorial Day weekend and made surprise appearances at concerts by Jeff Beck in Sheffield on Sunday.
He also made an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday and Tuesday. Johnny Depp, a guitarist, has his band, the Hollywood Vampires, with Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Alice Cooper.
Amber Heard’s spokesperson made a statement, “Your presence shows where your priorities are.”
Johnny Depp played guitar in the UK while Amber Heard waited for the verdict in Virginia. ”Johnny Depp is taking his snickering and lack of seriousness on tour.”
Several witnesses testified during the trial, including bodyguards, agents, Hollywood executives, entertainment industry experts, friends, doctors, and relatives.
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp each spent days on the witness stand during the televised trial.
The trial was attended by hundreds of fans of the “Pirates” star and accompanied by a #JusticeForJohnnyDepp campaign on social media.
