Kuwait city: Several people were injured as a Fire broke out at a Kuwaiti oil refinery on Monday. However, the KUNA news agency reported quoting a statement by Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) that the operations remain unaffected.

Plumes of smoke were rising from the Mina Al-Ahmadi facility. It is located some 40 kilometers south of the capital on the Gulf coast.

The state refiner reported that the Fire at the ARDS (atmospheric residue desulphurization) unit was isolated. The Fire at the unit was brought under control.

Several workers employed by a contractor suffered minor injuries, mostly from smoke inhalation. The injured received first aid at the site; those with serious injuries were transported to a hospital and reported to be in “stable condition.”

KNPC, on its Twitter account, said, “The refinery operations and export operations were not affected, and there has been no impact to local marketing operations and supplies to the electricity and water ministry,” KNPC said on its Twitter account.

Last month KNPC said it began expansions at the refinery that would lower emissions at the plant. The expanded capacity at the Mina Al-Ahmadi Kuwait Oil Refinery brings the daily production to 346,000 barrels per day.
