Riyadh: The Saudi Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the Kingdom was following events in Lebanon closely after gun battles left at least six people dead and several others wounded in the country’s capital city on Thursday.

A ministry statement said Saudi Arabia stood with the people of Lebanon and hoped the situation would stabilize soon.

The city with a long history of militant violence saw tension over an investigation of a massive blast last year in Beirut spill into the worst ever street violence in over a decade on Thursday.

The Saudi Foreign minister said, “The Kingdom seeks for Lebanon to achieve security and peace by ending the possession and use of weapons outside the framework of the state, and for the strengthening of the Lebanese state for the benefit of all Lebanese.”
