Saudi Arabia has made a groundbreaking discovery by extracting lithium from its oil fields, marking a significant economic shift. Led by Saudi Aramco, the state-owned petroleum giant, this initiative aims to reduce the nation’s reliance on oil and diversify its revenue streams.
The pilot project successfully demonstrated the feasibility of extracting lithium from brine runoff in oil fields near the sea, addressing the growing global demand for lithium, which is essential for manufacturing batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and electronics.
This effort involves collaboration with Lithium Infinity (Lihytech), a King Abdullah University of Science and Technology startup, and the Saudi mining company Ma’aden. Advanced technology developed at the university is being utilized to enhance the extraction process.
This discovery aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to reduce its dependence on oil and establish itself as a global hub for EV production. Deputy Minister of Mining Affairs Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer expressed optimism about the project’s profitability, even though extraction costs are higher than traditional mining methods.
As global lithium prices rise and sustainable energy demand grows, Saudi Arabia’s entry into lithium extraction places it in a strong position within the evolving energy landscape. Major oil companies like Exxon Mobil and Occidental Petroleum are also exploring similar green energy technologies, highlighting an industry-wide trend.
Plans are underway to launch a commercial pilot program for direct lithium mining, using brines produced during oil extraction processes. This initiative represents a new source of Saudi Arabia’s wealth and underscores its commitment to sustainability.
