Saudi Arabia has launched a major legal reform for domestic workers. Starting Sunday, May 11, 2025, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has introduced a six-month grace period for workers reported as “absent from work” (huroob). This move offers a legal path to fix their status and stay employed in the Kingdom.
Who Can Apply?
Only domestic workers who received huroob status before May 11, 2025, and are still living in Saudi Arabia, can benefit. Workers who already left the country do not qualify.
How Can They Fix Their Status?
Eligible workers can transfer their sponsorship to a new employer. The process takes place through the Musaned platform, the government’s official site for domestic employment services.
New employers must log in to Musaned and complete the sponsorship transfer. The system handles the process automatically to make it fast and simple.
How Long Is the Grace Period?
The grace period will last for six months, starting from May 11, 2025. Workers and employers should act early to avoid delays.
Why This Matters
This initiative supports legal labor practices and protects the rights of both employers and domestic workers. It also helps regulate the labor market and reduce undocumented employment.
“The initiative is part of the Ministry’s efforts to regulate the labor market and allows domestic workers, who have previously been reported as absentees and are still illegally present in the Kingdom, to correct their status by transferring their services to other employers after completing the necessary procedures.”
What Should You Do?
If you’re a domestic worker under huroob status—or a household looking to hire—you should visit Musaned.gov.sa. The platform guides users through every step of the correction process.
Final Thoughts
Saudi Arabia’s new policy offers a fresh start for domestic workers facing legal uncertainty. It ensures a smoother work environment and strengthens legal protections for all parties involved.
