LifestyleRiyadh Metro Opens Its First Phase: A New Era for Public Transport

On December 1, 2024, the Riyadh Metro officially opened its first phase to the public. This major milestone was celebrated with an inauguration by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The metro’s launch marks a significant transformation for public transportation in the Saudi capital.

The Riyadh Metro is designed to tackle traffic congestion while improving mobility. It is well-suited to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population, projected to reach 15 to 20 million people by 2030.

Key Features of the Riyadh Metro

Network Overview: The first phase includes three operational lines—blue, Yellow, and Purple. These lines stretch across 104 kilometers and have 85 stations in total. When fully completed, the metro network will expand to six lines, covering 176 kilometers.

Capacity and Efficiency: The metro system is expected to serve 1.2 million passengers daily. Once the entire network is operational, this capacity can double, significantly impacting Riyadh’s transportation infrastructure.

Economic Impact: The Riyadh Metro’s construction created over 65,000 jobs. The project will stimulate local economies by improving connectivity and boosting real estate values.

Looking Ahead: Future Developments

Several additional lines are scheduled to open soon. The next phase will launch by mid-December 2024, with the Orange Line set to open on January 5, 2025. This phased approach will ensure the metro integrates smoothly into Riyadh’s urban landscape, supporting sustainable transportation options.

The Riyadh Metro is a crucial part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on economic diversification and improving public services. This project will play a key role in reshaping the city and its transport system for years.
