Saudi Arabia has reached a historic milestone in its cinematic journey. The Saudi Film Commission has opened submissions for the Kingdom’s first official Oscar entry. This invitation is for the 98th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category.
From Direct Nominations to Open Submissions
Previously, the commission selected films through internal nominations. Now, all Saudi filmmakers can submit their works for consideration under clear guidelines. This change promotes transparency, inclusivity, and equal opportunity for local talent.
Eligibility Criteria for Films
Films must premiere theatrically in Saudi Arabia between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025.
They must have a commercial run of at least one week in Saudi cinemas.
The film should be feature-length, mainly in a non-English language, and have accurate English subtitles.
Creative control must be in the hands of Saudi citizens, residents, or recognized refugees.
Submission Requirements
Filmmakers must provide a digital film copy with a secure viewing link.
They should also submit a complete cast list, a director biography, and a high-resolution director photo.
Key artwork and official proof of release are required.
Independent Nomination Committee
A newly formed committee of independent industry professionals will evaluate submissions.
The committee will review, discuss, and vote under official Academy guidelines. Its goal is to choose the strongest film to represent Saudi Arabia internationally.
Global Outreach through Locarno Film Festival
Alongside the Oscars initiative, Saudi Arabia is present at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.
The festival runs from August 6 to 16, 2025. It focuses on arthouse, experimental, and debut films by emerging directors. Saudi participation helps connect local filmmakers with European and global audiences.
A New Era for Saudi Cinema
This open submission marks a bold step toward elevating Saudi cinema worldwide.
