Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi have announced plans to merge under a single holding company to enhance their global competitiveness in the automotive market.
Once finalized, this partnership will establish the world’s third-largest automaker, following Toyota and Volkswagen.
The merger is set to be completed by August 2026, based on a memorandum of understanding signed by Honda and Nissan on December 23, 2024.

Strategic Goals:
The merger seeks to leverage shared resources and technologies to compete with electric vehicle (EV) leaders like Tesla and BYD. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe highlighted the need for greater scale to address the industry’s shift toward zero-emission and autonomous driving technologies.
Mitsubishi’s Role:
Mitsubishi Motors, already part of the Nissan alliance, has been invited to join the new venture. A decision on its participation is expected by the end of January 2025.
Financial Projections:
The combined entity is projected to generate over 30 trillion yen ($191.4 billion) in revenue and more than 3 trillion yen in operating profit. The new company’s market capitalization is expected to exceed $50 billion.
Future Outlook:
Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida expressed optimism about delivering innovative products through the alliance. However, the impact on customer experience and Mitsubishi’s future involvement remains uncertain. During the initial phases, the brands will continue to operate independently.
