Saudi Arabia has commissioned Hans Zimmer, the Oscar-winning composer, to rework its national anthem, Aash Al-Malik (“Long Live the King”). This initiative aligns with the kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the economy and enhance cultural initiatives.
Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, announced the collaboration on social media. He shared that discussions with Zimmer focused on integrating new musical instruments to modernize the anthem’s sound.
Egyptian musician Abdul Rahman Al-Khateeb composed the current version of Aash Al-Malik in 1947 at the request of King Abdulaziz, Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch. The anthem has since remained essentially unchanged.
Zimmer is also in talks to compose a new musical piece, Arabia, inspired by Saudi culture. Additionally, he may score the soundtrack for a historical film about the Battle of Yarmouk, further contributing to the kingdom’s cultural transformation.
Saudi Arabia’s decision to revamp its national anthem reflects its broader efforts to modernize and enhance its global cultural presence. The move follows ongoing initiatives to promote arts and entertainment, including hosting concerts and cultural events as part of Riyadh Season.
Authorities have not disclosed specific reasons for revising the anthem at this time. However, the collaboration with Hans Zimmer marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s cultural evolution and its ambition to project a contemporary image on the world stage.
