Riyadh — Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman appreciated the approval of the Personal Status Law by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. The deputy premier and defence minister said it is a qualitative leap in the government’s efforts. It protects human rights, consolidates family stability, enhances women’s empowerment, and promotes rights.

The law will take effect 90 days after publication in the Official Gazette. “The law is comprehensive. It addresses all the problems that the family and women are suffering from,” said the Crown Prince.

On Feb. 8, 2021, The Crown Prince announced the introduction of four key legislations, including the Personal Status Law. These measures are part of judicial reformation and the improvement of the legislative environment in the Kingdom.

He said the new laws, including the Civil Transactions Law, the Law of Evidence, and the Penal Code for Discretionary Sanctions. It represents a new wave of judicial reforms in the Kingdom. The Cabinet had earlier approved the Law of Evidence.

Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the Cabinet approved the Personal Status Law, following the Shoura Council’s earlier approval of the draft law.

The Crown Prince said the Personal Status Law was a derivative of the provisions and purposes of the Islamic Shariah. It took into account the modern legal needs and best judicial practices internationally.

“The law keeps abreast of developments and changes in reality, and it will contribute to safeguarding the family and its stability as the primary component of society.

“The law would also work to improve the condition of family and children. Rein in the discretionary power of the judge to bring down discrepancy in judicial rulings in this regard.”

The Crown Prince emphasized that the introduction of the Personal Status Law; reflects the leadership’s commitment to development and reform approach.

He thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, for his excellent care in developing the legislative system in the Kingdom. Including the judicial facility, raising judicial efficiency to guarantee and preserve rights and achieve prompt delivery of justice.
