Who are Yajooj and Majooj?
Yajooj (Gog) and Majooj (Magog) come from the Arabic root word ‘Ujaaj,’ which means to be dry or harsh. These words also come from the meaning of ‘Al Ajj,’ which translates to the quick arrival of an enemy.
Therefore, Yajooj and Majooj are human tribes that are dry and harsh. Also, according to several scholars, they will come out so quickly that to survive, we will have to run away from them.
Furthermore, both Yajooj and Majooj are tribes that existed on Earth close to the time of Hazrat Musa (AS). Scholars describe them as brutal and aggressive tribes who attack swiftly. They will burn and destroy crops, killing inhabitants of the land and resulting in great devastation in that area.
Physical Appearance of Yajooj and Majooj
While many believe that they are people with short height and broad body figures with Asian physical features, there are no descriptions of their appearance in the Quran or Ahadith.
What we do know is that there will be so many of them that all Muslims of that time combined will not be able to beat them.
How Will Yajooj and Majooj Break The Wall?
It is confirmed through both the Quran and Ahadith that Gog and Magog will return close to the Day of Judgement. This is also why their return is among the signs of the end of times.
According to Ahadith, Yajooj and Majooj have been trying to break the wall since they were trapped behind it. They work on breaking it each day but give up by the end of the day, saying that they will continue the task the day after(without saying insha’Allah). However, the wall miraculously builds back overnight, and they must start their job again.
This cycle will continue until the day they say insha’Allah before going back at the end of the day. When this day comes, by the will of Allah, He will destroy the wall that was impossible for humans to break down.
Furthermore, the Quran informs us that these tribes are enormous in quantity. Also, when they come, they will emerge from the valleys, rugged terrains, and mountainous regions. Upon their release, they will cause immense destruction and corruption on Earth and rapidly spread worldwide.
The end of Yajooj and Majooj
The Quran explains in 18:98 that they will return at a time when Isa A.S. has already descended. Allah will send Jibreel A.S. to inform Isa A.S. about the release of Gog and Magog, asking him to take His servants(Muslims) and hide under the mountains as we will be unable to defeat them because of their large quantity.
Will Yajooj and Majooj Kill Everyone?
Once Yajooj and Majooj start spreading worldwide, they will kill everyone in their way, causing Fitnah and Fasaad to conquer the world.
They will continue traveling until they reach a mountain called Bait al-Muqaddas. There, they will say, “We have killed whoever was on the Earth. Come! Let us kill the inhabitants of the sky!” They will shoot their arrows towards the sky, which Allah will return with blood on them. This will assure them that they have indeed killed all the inhabitants of the sky as well (Jami Tirmidhi 2240).
Without the knowledge of Isa A.S. hiding along with other Muslims, these two tribes will then claim themselves as the King of Earth.
Meanwhile, Hazrat Isa, along with the Muslims, will be confined to the mountains only with limited food and water supply.
Then, they will start supplicating, making dua to Allah to help them. As a form of Allah’s help, He will send down a disease (type of a worm or parasite). These worms will come out of the necks of Yajooj and Majooj as disease, killing them all at once.
When Hazrat Isa comes down with his companions, they will find the dead bodies of Yajooj and Majooj scattered around. These bodies will be emitting a foul smell. Upon asking for Allah’s help to get rid of the smell, Allah will send down birds with vulture-like necks. These birds will carry the remains of these tribes. Later, Allah will send rain to end the stench and fertilize the land again.
Where are Yajooj and Majooj Now?
Many people believe that Yajooj and Majooj are located in the Great Wall of China. Some say that they might be hidden in the Bermuda Triangle.
However, people also believe they could be in the lands of Russia or Mongolia due to their rugged terrain. They believe this since the Quran says these tribes will emerge from the mountainous areas.
Meanwhile, others think that they could be located near the North or South Pole. The wall imprisoning them is made of iron. Therefore, they believe the snow in these regions can easily cover this wall.
There are many speculations of where they might be. However, neither the Quran nor Ahadith mentions the exact location of Yajooj and Majooj.
